Motivation is defined as the reason or reasons that someone has for acting or behaving in a particular way or the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. It gives the reasons for people’s actions, desires, and needs.

Managing IT personnel is challenging, and when motivational tools that are available to the managers may be limited, there is a need to seek proficient methods and styles in order to keep employees motivated. When you understand the thinking and behavioural triggers of employee and the employee understands the strategy and objectives and the value of their contribution, then you are able to maximize their enthusiasm and engagement and rapidly move in the same direction. One of the primary roles of management is to state and define the work objectives and mission, and identify strategies to achieve the stated goals with scarce resources. In an environment where there is a continuous drive to do more with less, it is easy to focus on what is broken and try to fix it and give less importance on pointing out where employees are doing well.

Having an employee work for an organization for many years should be considered an asset to the workplace, but can you imagine going a full year without receiving any type of recognition? It is essential that employees feel that they are valued for the work that they are producing and that by recognizing their achievements their rewards will go beyond productivity by making them feel part of the solution, part of the strategy and success of the organization as a whole. Having a vision that is malleable and encourages employees to come up with new ideas is a skill of a good manager. Nothing will motivate an employee more than knowing that he or she has contributed something unique that has changed an approach in a positive way.

By leveraging an effective recognition program within the organization managers could avoid one other issue, employee turnover, which is expensive and slows down productivity. Companies with recognition programs have a lower voluntary turnover.

Gratitude is one of the most effective forms of showing and gaining that trust from employees. Appreciating employees for their work and letting your employee, say, take free rein over a project, is one of the non-verbal forms of showing recognition (you have trusted them to do their job).

Gene Smith, The Ohio State University (OSU) Buckeyes Athletic Director (AD) – Bio

Gene Smith is the athletic director (or AD for short) of the Ohio State University (OSU) Buckeyes athletic program. Mr. Smith oversees a diverse assortment of both men’s and women’s sports for a school that has the unique distinction of being one of just four colleges to have won national championships in men’s football, basketball, and baseball.

The official appointment of Gene Smith to the heralded position of athletic director for Ohio State occurred on March 5, 2005. In leading up to his position as the head of one of the most robust college sports programs in the country Gene acquired relevant work experience while serving as the athletic director at Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, and Arizona State.

In total Mr. Smith oversees approximately 900 student athletes that span a gauntlet of 39 varsity sports (20 women and 19 men). The Buckeyes have won national championships in numerous sports that are often forgotten about including synchronized swimming, gymnastics, and fencing.

Long before carrying the burden of the highly scrutinized position of Ohio State University athletic director Gene Smith was raised in Cleveland, Ohio not far from the Columbus, Ohio location of the main OSU campus. Smith was an athlete in his youth at St. Peter Chanel High School in nearby Bedford, Ohio and went onto the University of Notre Dame in Indiana where he earned an athletic scholarship as a defensive end for the football team.

Before graduating from Notre Dame in 1977 Gene was part of the 1973 national championship football team. Gene got his diploma in business administration and stayed with his alma mater as an assistant coach with the football program until 1981.

In 1981 Gene Smith experimented with a brief career stint outside the realm of college athletics when he accepted a job in the marketing department of International Business Machines (IBM). After two years in the private sector Smith realized that his true calling was a lifelong career devoted to collegiate sports.

In 1983 the Ohio native found a position at Eastern Michigan University where he was able to serve as an assistant athletic director. In 1986 Gene became the full time head athletic director at Eastern Michigan. Seven years later in 1993 Gene became the AD at Iowa State University where he dutifully served until the year 2000 when he moved across the country to Tempe, Arizona to accept the position as athletic director of Arizona State University.

Soccer Coaching – A Missing Link to Motivation

One of the main dilemmas we soccer coaches can face is a perceived lack of motivation from our players. But what if our leadership approach is unintentionally de-motivating?

A big part of motivation comes down to moving from compliance to commitment. In our attempt to teach and be the authority we can tend to dictate. When we set all the goals and make all the rules the best we can hope for is complete compliance.

A definition for compliance is: conformity, obedience, surrendering power to another – especially in a weak and subservient way.

Not very motivating. When we consult our players on a regular basis (and yes, sometimes their parents) there is a significant difference. People will be committed to make something work if they are involved in the decision-making process.

A definition of commitment is: engagement, involvement, a promise, sincere purpose. Much more buy-in! If motivation is that easy, why don’t more leaders consult the group in their decisions?

1. It takes more time and effort. It does take time to gather input from everyone, but I think of it as an investment. My experience is that you will either spend the time gaining input on the front end, or you will spend time and energy on compliance issues and motivation on the back end.

2. The Control/Participation Dilemma – the feeling that you will not be truly leading the group if they make all the decisions. Also, the difficulty in finding the right balance between making the decisions and consulting others.

Here is a participation progression borrowed and adapted from the book, Managing People, by Jane Weightman. Tells – the leader makes all the decisions and announces them. The group is expected to comply. Sells – the leader makes all the decisions, but sells and convinces the merits of them to the group. Consults – the leader presents the issue, asks for input from the group and then makes an educated decision. Joins – the leader defines the limits and then lets the group make the decision. What have I found to be effective? I consult my players (and their parents when appropriate) on just about everything with my teams and join them on their decisions at times. If there is an area where they are completely inexperienced, I make a decision and sell it. I have almost completely abandoned telling them what the decision is and making them comply. The bottom line is:

Shared goals lead to higher commitment and greater motivation.

Book Review – Financial Peace Revisited

Dave Ramsey’s last major book, “The Total Money Makeover”, has been a best seller for several years. It is his best book today. Also, it is one of the best book on personal finance out there. Prior to that book, the book, “Financial Peace”, was created as a self-published book. Then, it became a best seller and has been revised and revisited.

There is something soothing and calming about the title,”Financial Peace”. Everyone has a financial life- whether good or bad. Everyone (whether they care to admit) wants to have peace in their financial life. As mentioned on a constant basis by Dave Ramsey, personal finance is more personal than finance. There are a lot of emotions (and some logic) conjured up when you discuss personal finance.

It seems that most people handle their personal finance the same way they handle everything else in their life. There is a lot of complications, confusions, even negligence, indifference, good intentions, and other emotions and mixed feelings.

This book addresses many of those issues especially how money affects our relationships (and how our relationships affect our handling of money). The principles may seem simplistic such as KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)- but they are crucial in order to succeed in your personal finances. The principle of simplicity (or KISS) is primarily an issue of dealing with cash and not credit. When we live on a cash basis, then we do not have to worry about interest rates, finance charges, fees, etc. We have simplified our lives to the better. As Dave Ramsey would say, we do not have to worship at the altar of the almighty FICO score. This is also applicable to co-signing loans. When we co-sign a loan, we pretty much are taking over the burden of paying someone else’s debt. By keeping our personal finances simple, we are respecting the other person as much as ourselves.

Another key principle the book discusses is the power of contentment. Contentment empowers us to restrain from spending on things or stuff that we do not need or even care about. Being contented would allow you to have less stuff that you do not need but have more cash. The book discusses this principle extensively and vividly in order to allow you to succeed in your personal finance.

Also, money affects our relationships. It is critical and crucial to not borrow from anyone or anything especially (and most especially) from friends or family members. The close the relationship; the more crucial it is to not borrow from that person. Owing someone money changes all the dynamics of that relationship.

This is a good book to read on personal finances. When you apply the principles, you will attain that elusive financial peace.
